Recently, Governor Pritzker visited a family farm in Macon County. Let me be clear, this was strictly for a photo op because he pretended he carried about Illinois agriculture. And one thing we know that a tree is known by its fruit and the politicians are known for their votes and the action that they take.
In the past eight years, Governor pritzker and the Democrats have used the death tax as a political carrot, pretending to have a desire to fix this bad policy until the election was over and every two years it’s rinse and repeat and pretend like they care. For decades, Illinois families have poured their blood, sweat, and tears into building their family farms and their main street small businesses. But under Democrats punishing death tax, the reward for a lifetime of hard work is a massive tax bill from Springfield, the day that you die.
Illinois is one of 12 states left that punish you for dying and make it almost impossible to pass on your life’s work to the next generation. Without spending tens of thousands of dollars on attorneys and accountants. This tax forces the next generation to sell the family farm to liquidate their assets or just the plain pack up and leave Illinois.
The death tax is flat out wrong, but it does follow the Democrat playbook. If it moves tax it, if it keeps moving regulate it, and when it stops moving and dies the vultures of the government are sitting like vultures on a high line, ready to pounce on the dead carcass.
It’s time to stand up for our Illinois families and protect our agricultural heritage and do the right thing and totally repeal the death tax.
Estate Tax In Other States
Most U.S. states do not charge an estate tax or an inheritance tax, or have already repealed their taxes on estates and inheritances. Under current law, only 12 states charge an estate/inheritance tax. Midwestern states of Indiana, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin, which do not charge an estate tax or an inheritance tax. Large states that do not charge an estate/inheritance tax include California, Florida, and Texas.
Iowa is in the process of phasing out its inheritance tax, with Hawkeye State inheritances scheduled to become fully tax-free in 2025.
