Illinois Democrats are pushing HB 5414, which would give inmates serving prison sentences the same voting privileges as the law-abiding citizens impacted by those crimes.
Illinois Democrats have yet again proved they support criminals over law abiding citizens. Individuals convicted of a felony would have their voting rights restored no later than 14 days after conviction, even while serving a sentence in a correctional institution. People already incarcerated before January 1, 2027 would have voting rights restored by January 14, 2028. A person could not be denied the right to vote because of a past criminal conviction.
Local election authorities would be required to work with correctional institutions and the Illinois Department of Corrections to help eligible incarcerated voters cast ballots by mail. Correctional facilities would need to coordinate election access for eligible voters housed in their institutions. If signed into law, the legislation would take effect on January 1, 2028.

“The Democrats continue their work to improve the quality of life for violent criminals and illegal immigrants,” said Miller. “The taxpayers of Illinois deserve to have a governor who prioritizes policies that benefit hard working families and businesses. Our state is bleeding population and jobs because of ridiculous policies.”
