SPRINGFIELD, IL…State Representative Chris Miller (R-Hindsboro) is urging Governor Pritzker to allow the State of Illinois to opt into the Educational Choice for Children Act. This legislation creates a private school voucher program that is available to all fifty states. Rep. Miller is Chief Co-Sponsor on HR0427 and says Illinois needs to support school choice for the next generation of students, so they receive quality education.
“Illinois public school students are struggling to meet proficiency standards and Democrat elected officials refuse to take action to improve student learning,” Miller said. “Our state killed the only successful school choice program we had and now the Illinois State Superintendent is suggesting lowering proficiency benchmarks to mask the crisis that has been created through poor educational policies.”
The Trump administration has enacted the Educational Choice for Children Act which establishes a federal tax-credit scholarship program to provide scholarship funds to low-income students across the country. The federal program is voluntary for states that wish to opt into the program and will be open for enrollment in 2027. The scholarships will be funded by private individuals and does not deflect funds from public schools and will allow students to use scholarship funds in their state for private schools, tutoring or other educational support.
Illinois’ School Choice Program sunset in 2023, stripping school choice from over 15,000 low-income students. Miller said Governor Pritzker should support the federal tax-credit scholarship program and expand access to educational opportunities for the state’s low-income students.
“These kids are our future, and they deserve to receive quality education through a school that embraces their specific style of learning so they can succeed,” Miller continued to say. “My colleagues and I strongly urge Governor Pritzker to give his full support to the Educational Choice for Children Act so students can thrive in an educational environment that is best suited for their needs.”
