No Good Will Come of 2025 Lame Duck Session

Legislators are gearing up for Lame Duck session that is scheduled for January 4-7. Republicans have argued against the upcoming Lame Duck session because we know bad public policy is being crafted behind closed doors. Illinois has a history of passing highly controversial legislation during this time. Before newly elected officials are sworn in, Democrats have historically passed bad legislation because, as Lame Ducks, they are not afraid of potential political repercussions.

For example, the so-called “SAFE-T Act” was passed in 2021 during the early morning hours. The anti-police legislation supports criminals and makes communities less safe. The SAFE-T Act’s original version was passed with only Democrat support. The number one concern in the law is the end of cash bail in Illinois. Police departments across the state have seen more crime, often by repeat offenders. The Democrats claim that crime is down, but police officers say fewer charges are being filed and some officers simply don’t make an arrest because the criminals will be quickly set free. It’s simple, Democrats continue to support criminals rather than the safety and security of communities.

Illinois was also quick to pass legislation that treads on people’s Second Amendment Rights through a sweeping, unconstitutional firearms and magazine ban. The “Protect Illinois Communities” Act makes it illegal to deliver, sell, or purchase any assault weapon in Illinois. As of now, Illinois’ assault weapons ban will remain in place, at least until a Federal appeals court hears full arguments challenging a lower court ruling that found the law unconstitutional.

This year is no different, as lawmakers prepare for another risky Lame Duck session. State Representative Chris Miller says Governor Pritzker will lie to the people of Illinois and likely sign off on bad public policy.

“Unfortunately, Lame Duck session is not designed to pass positive legislation that benefits the residents of Illinois. I’m sure this year, delusional Democrats will huddle up in a back room behind closed doors and craft policy which puts Illinois citizens last.”
